We, at the Parent and Community Engagement Unit in Local District Northwest, believe that children learn best when schools collaborate with parents as equal partners in their children’s education. Parents can partner with schools by promoting a culture of literacy and high expectations at home and at school. They can participate in school events and on committees, in addition to volunteering and serving in parent centers.
Our goals revolve around assisting schools with developing welcoming environments for parents while offering parents a variety of opportunities to partner with the school community to improve student achievement so that all students will graduate from the Los Angeles Unified School District prepared for college and future career endeavors.

What is Schoology and How does it work?
Schoology is like a teacher's website or an extension of their classroom online. Announcements, special dates, pictures, newsletters, discussions, lessons, videos, etc. could all be on a teacher's Schoology page. Students are enrolled in Schoology by the school through our PowerSchool, student information system.

What is Distance Learning?
Simply put, distance learning is when students are separated from teachers and peers. This means that students learn remotely and do not have face-to-face learning with instructors or other students. What does Distance Learning look like?
For LAUSD, Distance Learning includes the following:- Video conferencing is a common way for teachers to interact directly with students in live lessons. This could be a one-on-one session or a class-like scenario in which multiple students connect to the teacher live.
- Synchronous learning is when all the students learn together at the same time (and often even place) but the instructor is at another location. It often features video or teleconferencing that connects teachers and learners digitally.
- Asynchronous learning is a less connected but also less constrained format. Instead of live online lessons, students are given learning tasks with deadlines. They then self-study to complete the assignments.
