  • The Teacher of the Year (TOY) Program honors teachers with a strong commitment to their students, school, and the community. The program spotlights positive aspects of education and pays tribute to our richly diverse teaching force.

Our selection process aligns with the Los Angeles County of Education Teacher of the Year Program with the hope that one of the 5 teachers who move to the County level will have an opportunity to be chosen for State Teacher of the Year. If identified to proceed to the State level, the teacher will then have the opportunity to compete for the National Teacher of the Year title.

The nomination window opens during the second semester of the school year and the opportunity to nominate is announced via the district's website, local districts, and other outlets such as the AALA outreach.

Nominations for Teacher of the Year are made via the LAUSD website. Students, parents, and district employees are encouraged to make nominations. Once the nomination window closes, those nominated are invited to apply and submit a Teacher of the Year application. Each local district has a representative/contact person whom the nominees can reach out to for support.

    Eligibility

The teacher must have completed eight full years of teaching experience (with at least 5 in LAUSD) and meet the following criteria:

    • Fully credentialed teachers who who teach UTK thorugh grade twelve
    • Teachers of adults who provide instruction in the same curriculum as those who teach in elementary or secondary grades
    • Teachers who have some administrative responsibilities, but for whom teaching students is the primary responsibility
    • Teachers who are available to fulfill ambassadorial duties during the year

    Program Highlights

The responsibilities of being a Los Angeles Unified Teacher of the Year (TOY) often include serving as ambassadors for the teaching profession and representing LAUSD with pride. TOYs focus on positive changes and strive for student achievement while bringing light to the challenges of the teaching profession. A district-wide recognition event is held to celebrate the Teachers of the Year at the end of the school year.
