School Bus Driver

Potential Bus Drivers must meet the following entrance qualifications (not an exhaustive list):

- Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency

- Light Bus Driver: Six months of experience in driving a bus or truck or successful completion of the School Bus Certificate Training Program given by the LAUSD Transportation Services Branch

- Heavy Bus Driver: One year of experience in driving a bus or truck of at least 16,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. Successful completion of an accredited course in heavy bus driving training can be substituted for the one year of experience.

Do you not meet the minimum qualifications?
Transportation Services Branch offers a free School Bus Certification Training Program. This program will waive the minimum qualifications required for Light and Heavy Bus Drivers.

Step One: Application Link
Pre-qualified applicants may apply for the Bus Driver Trainee position and go through the employment screening process. Click here..

Step Two: Orientation
To get started, attend an orientation to learn more about the position requirements.

Step Three: Start Training
Qualified applicants for the Bus Driver Trainee position start training. The training consists of two parts; classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. On average, training will take up to 10–12 weeks.

Step Four: Complete all the testing requirements
Complete all the testing requirements with DMV & CHP. Upon obtaining your certification and license, you are placed on an eligibility list for Heavy or Light Bus Driver.

Step Five: Eligibility List
An offer for Light or Heavy Bus Driver is offered to you. After you accept a position, you will be considered for employment. You are now on the road to your new career!

Automotive Mechanic (Bus-Truck)

Potential Automotive Mechanics (Bus-Truck) must meet the follwoing qualifications (not an exhaustive list):

Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency

Completion of a four year apprentice training program in heavy duty automotive equipment repair, or four years of equivalent experience which must have included two years of mechanical work on heavy-duty buses or trucks.
