Welcome
Given that there is a strong correlation between a student’s physical fitness and academic achievement, the Physical Education Programs office provides support to all schools for the implementation of quality physical education programs that are aligned to the California Physical Education Standards and Framework. A primary goal of physical education, which engages students in moderate to vigorous physical activity and must be taught and assessed by a credentialed teacher, is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of physical activity. While physical education addresses the knowledge (cognitive) and social (affective) aspects of a child; the main focus is on physical development and skills (psychomotor) and therefore, addresses the needs of the whole-child. This is in direct contrast to physical activity, which is any form of movement such as gardening and walking. Developmentally and appropriate pedagogical practices in TK-12 grade physical education instruction fosters students’ ability to pursue a physically active lifestyle that promotes student wellness.
