    EXCEPTIONAL TEAM AWARD: Markham Middle School MESA Advisors (April 7, 2014)

    Going the distance, Philip Gerlach and Oscar Espinoza at Markham Middle School coached their students to a win in the 2013 MESA National Engineering Design Competition. However, this is not everything that the teacher team has done for students: “Our team works by finding areas of student interest and then we strive to build opportunities for the students to learn and experience the knowledge first-hand.     MINI-GRANT UPDATE: South East High School Geometry Team--"No Pressure!" (March 17, 2014)

    The South East High School Geometry team has been hard at work on their mini-grant, titled “CCSS Geometry Curriculum Extension for Trigonometry & Statistics Assessment/Writing.” This project is the second mini-grant they have received from the SIG Office, with the first one focusing on piloting four separate projects and supporting lessons integrating the Common Core State Standards. Any SIG team is eligible to submit a mini-grant application for up to $10,000, and projects have ranged from professional development, parent engagement, dropout prevention, and afterschool mentoring program.     EXCEPTIONAL TEAM AWARD: East Valley High School English Department (February 26, 2014)

    Congratulations to the English Department at East Valley High School, winners of the first Exceptional Team Award in 2013-14. Says Kathryn Gullo, Department Chair, "At the end of Spring 2012, during a department meeting, we looked around and realized, it was time for a change. We were aware that the Common Core Standards would prompt a new way of working and, having analyzed the data, the department realized that we needed to build a collaborative, consensus-driven model." Winners receive up to $10,000 towards supplemental materials, supplies, and PD time/ opportunities. The site offers a wide range of resources and tools enabling users to share school turnaround practices and lessons learned to strengthen teaching and learning for all schools.
