What is Telemental Health?
Telemental Health uses video conferencing technology (similar to Zoom or Teams) to allow a person to connect immediately to a qualified professional anywhere in the world from wherever they are. Telemental Health in schools allows students to connect to a provider without having to leave the campus.

How does Telemental Health work?
Once the parent/guardian consents for telemental health, the student will be scheduled for a telemental health session in a confidential room on campus with a mental health professional.

How can I access services for my child?
If you are interested in telemental health services for your child, contact your school site. School staff will provide you with guidance.

What about student privacy and safety?
Safety and confidentiality are a priority. Telemental Health is provided in a private room to ensure confidentiality between the mental health staff and the student. A designated school-site staff member will be contacted via phone by the mental health staff in case the student receiving services needs to be further supported in emergency situations.

Who provides the Telemental Health services?
The current provider is Hazel Health, a national organization that specializes in telemental health services.

Will telemental health replace in-person counseling?
No. The district is developing Telemental Health services as a way of expanding the existing catalog of mental health and wellness services.

How does Hazel support families needing language accommodations?
The Hazel Health team will attempt to match students with a language-appropriate therapist whenever possible. If native language is not available, the Hazel Health team may l utilize automated systems to communicate during the therapy session and parent interactions.

What is the cost to students / families for Telemental Health?
There is no cost to students or families for the student to receive Telemental Health services.

Does Hazel Health provide any support for the parent/guardian?
The current partnership between LA Unified and Hazel Health is designed for K-12 students.

What occurs in the event of a student crisis situation during a session?
School site crisis team members will be notified and will follow the indicated District policy.
