    A Message from the Director....

    Dual Language Director Alfredo Ortiz

It was the noted American journalist, Flora Lewis, who once said that “learning another language is not [just] learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.” Ms. Lewis understood the power of language that goes beyond the ability to communicate—i.e., to read, write, listen, and speak. Language is the portal to understanding culture, history, and tradition. Becoming bilingual broadens one’s perspective of the world. Along with this broader perspective come opportunities to engage with others in meaningful ways. Language is the great mediator that brings people of diverse backgrounds together. As we prepare our students for the world, there is no better tool that we can provide them with than the ability to learn a second language. Please see LAUSD's 2022-2026 Strategic Plan on this page for more information on how Dual Language Education fits into our vision for the future wellbeing and success of our students.

At Region West, we are committed to ensuring all our students have the opportunity to learn a language other than English, and reap the benefits of becoming bilingual.  Our goals for our students in dual language include: Bilingualism and Biliteracy, High Academic Achievement, and Sociocultural Competence. These goals drive our instructional programs and provide the basis for preparing our students for the demands that come with living in a multiligual and multicultural world. Region West offers 52 Dual Language Education programs at 42 sites, serving over 4,000 students. We offer more languages than any other region in LAUSD, including Armenian, French, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish and Japanese. Additionally, our World Language programs offer American Sign Language, Arabic, Italian, German, and Latin. We understand that for some of our students, developing proficiency in another language may require anywhere between 5 and 7 years of instruction, if not more. It is for this reason that we are working diligently to ensure that every community of schools offers a comprehensive Dual Language Education pathway (TK-12). Through our pathways, our students develop increasingly higher levels of language and academic proficiency in the target language, setting them up for future success—whether it be in higher education or by way of career opportunities.

I invite you to look through our website and explore the many options that we have for our communities of schools. If you are a parent contemplating enrolling your child in a Dual Language Education program, you have come to the right place. We have an assortment of programs and models that are sure to suit the needs of every student.

Thank you for visiting our website and come back soon!
