    Secondary Computer Science Course Updates

    At the end of the 2018-19 school year, Introduction to Computers will sunset and be replaced with Computer Science Discoveries (180115 and 180116), Introduction to Programming: Game Design and App Development (180117 and 180118), Introduction to Physical Computing (180121 and 180122),  or an equivalent Career Technical Education (CTE) computer science course for students in grades 6-8.  These courses are aligned to the new California Computer Science State Standards. For students in high school, Computer Science 1 (CTE introductory), Exploring Computer Science (CTE concentrator, or non-CTE), or an equivalent course aligned to the new California State Computer Science Standards will be offered in lieu of students enrolling in Introduction to Computers, which will no longer be part of the secondary course catalog and will serve as introductory  computer science courses open to all students.

    Pilot schools have been learning about special features that help teachers to facilitate class discussions, create student and extra credit assignments, and ways in which elementary teachers can use Schoology to personalize learning.  In the following webinar series, we invite you to explore the use and potential of these powerful tools.  If your school is interested in participating in Phase 2 of the pilot, please fill out this survey.

     Webinar Session 1 - March 17, 2016
    In this session we covered strategies for adjusting the student completion rules in the self-paced Gradebook course to make it more flexible, the student assignment workflow and joining/using the ITF Schoology Group.

     Webinar Session 2 - March 30, 2016
    In this Session we covered creating and facilitating online discussions - including adding video/audio, differentiating with grading groups and requiring students to post before revealing other responses.

     Webinar Session 3 - April 6, 2016
    In this Session we covered ways to use Schoology in the Elementary Classroom.

    Webinar Session 4 - April 13, 2016
    In this Session we went over Gradebook questions from teachers including extra credit. We then took a look at the Portfolio feature which is currently available only to teachers in the Test environment.

    PEACE Fund/LAUSD Surface Computer Contest

    Through a generous donation provided by The PEACE Fund, Nine classrooms in the LAUSD will be awarded 10 Surface computers each to support teaching and learning.  33 teachers in grades K-12 have been nominated and are submitting projects that will be voted on by the public to determine the winners - voting begins on Minday, February 1.     The purpose of the Gradebook and LMS pilot is to determine whether Schoology's Gradebook and LMS are the right tools for tracking student performance and managing digital instructional content for the District, while also ensuring that these applications will integrate seamlessly with MiSiS and the Parent PASSport, and gathering and analyzing usage data and feedback from participating pilot schools to support development of a District-wide implementation plan through a thoughtful, informed approach.
