Objective
The Access Compliance Unit (ACU) provides Districtwide guidance and technical support to ensure District facilities meet program accessibility requirements under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ACU's primary objective is to work with the various departments within the Facilities Services Division to satisfy ADA program accessibility from the initial design phase through construction completion.
Services
The ACU provides ADA Compliance guidance, services and technical support as follows:
- Conducts surveys at LAUSD schools which generate Scoping requirements for the Barrier Removal Program, which was created to ensure LAUSD's compliance with the program accessibility requirements of Title II of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Supports Maintenance & Operations, Design Professionals, and Project Execution to ensure that all New Construction and Alterations are executed in accordance with the applicable Building Code and Federal guidelines.
- Provides support to the District's Educational Equity Compliance Office in Facilities ADA compliance related issues associated with Office of Civil Rights (OCR) case investigations, California Department of Education audits and complaints filed under the District's Uniform Complaint Procedures (UCP) process.
- Implements ADA Barrier Removals required under the Rapid Access Program (RAP). The RAP provides an avenue for schools to request rapid and minor ADA program accessibility projects which are executed in a timely manner when a need arises.
- Assists in identifying Critical Barrier Removal Projects which arises from a RAP request where a program accessibility issue is larger in scale and therefore cannot be completed according to the RAP timelines. At that point, a Critical Barrier Removal project is identified and LAUSD provides an ADA Barrier Removal corrective project to provide program accessibility.
- Procedures to Request Barrier Removal for Program Accessibility, for students and other individuals with Disabilities can be found logging into the LAUSD eLibrary and searching for REF-066902 under Find Documents. REF-069902 is referred to as "Procedures to Request Barrier Removal for Program Accessibility, for students and Other Individual with Disabilities."
