Family Math Night brings hundreds to Angeles Mesa Elementary

Neighborhood parents and their kids packed the auditorium on the evening of Tuesday, March 14 to learn ways that families can help their children learn mathematics during the school’s Family Math Night at Angeles Mesa ES.

Featuring three workshops for parents and students each workshop focused on different math skills. Families were shown games and interactive ways to help their children practice the skills they are being taught every day in the classroom.  The evening started in the auditorium with an overview and explanation of PI (3.14).  Parents were given an opportunity to enter a raffle and win a free pie.  Parents were given cards and each time a workshop was completed they received a stamp. Three stamps on the card allowed parents to enter the raffle and the pies were given away at the end of the night. In addition families were given a bag with various games and manipulatives to support the learning from the workshops.

“We wanted to come up with ways to help our parents support their children’s math skills,” said Judy Nguyen, the teacher who led a team of teachers in planning and implementing the event.  “Our goal here was to give the parents something fun to do with their kids that would reinforce the math our students are learning every day.”

The teachers, Ms. Nguyen, Ms. Chung, Ms. Fisher, Ms. Martinez, Ms. Meza and Ms. Reyes recieved funding from the LAUSD School Improvement Grant, “Educator Mini-Grant” to fund the time needed to plan and implement the event.

Principal Emily Williams was proud of her teachers.

“It is the hard work of our teachers that makes Angeles Mesa such a great school for kids to learn,” said Williams. “You could tell just by watching the parents and kids tonight what a great success this event was.”
