Pertussis
Pertussis (or whooping cough) is a bacterial disease which in the year 2010 had an epidemic in California. Pertussis is a vaccine-preventable disease. The bacterium that causes pertussis is spread when individuals are in close contact to an infected person who coughs or sneezes. The early signs of disease are hard to distinguish from a common cold. The symptoms often worsen over several weeks and consist of severe coughing attacks and associated breathing problems.
Pertussis is most dangerous to newborn infants. In an effort to prevent the spread of pertussis, there are certain steps schools and families can take that can be found in the following websites: Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Shots for Schools.
Where can my child go to get the Pertussis vaccine (Tdap)?
What can I do if my child already had their vaccination yet I still get phone calls from the school?
If your child has already been vaccinated and the record sent to their school, please allow the school personnel some time to update the electronic system. In the meantime, please disregard reminding phone calls or messages about getting your child the Pertussis Vaccination.
