Credentialed/Licensed K-12 Teacher Application Process





    The mission of the Human Resources Division of the Los Angeles Unified School District is to ensure that every student is taught by a highly effective teacher.


    The District seeks fully certified, NCLB-compliant educators who are experts in their content area, innovative, pedagogically strong, and professionally committed to the welfare and demonstrated academic growth of all students.  Additionally, candidates must be committed to ensure that all students graduate college-prepared and career-ready.

    Teacher candidates who hold a teaching credential / certificate must meet the following minimum LAUSD employment standards:

    • Successful completion of the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST).
    • Completion of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.*
    • Meet the Federal legislation, "HR1 No Child Left Behind Act of 2001", definition of a "Highly Qualified" teacher.


    *Teacher candidates who do not hold a teaching credential / certificate must also have attained a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 for the Baccalaureate degree, in addition to the above requirements.



    Human Resources is pleased to announce that effective April 1, 2017, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) has approved amendments that will change the period of validity for examinations used toward obtaining a credential or other teaching or services authorization from the current 5 year validity period to 10 years.  California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET) and California Teacher of English Learners (CTEL) examinations for certification passed after April 1, 2007 will now fall under the ten-year window of validity.

    The Eligibility Process:


    Step 1

    Candidates will be asked to upload the following documents to their online application:

    o   California teaching credential with English Learner Authorization OR out-of-state certification/license

    o   Basic Skills requirement (CBEST or equivalent)

    o   Verification of NCLB Highly Qualified Status (CSET, Subject Matter Waiver, or equivalent)

      • Non-electronic, original, official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
      • Resumé (Please attach to your online application)

    In addition, candidates are asked to provide contact information for all employers within the last three (3) years

    o  This information will be used to transmit a confidential reference form to previous employers

    Candidates who have completed student teaching within the previous three (3) years will also be asked to provide contact information for their master/cooperating teacher

    Additional references and documents may be requested


    Step 2 


    Applications are active for one (1) year from the date submitted, and will be reviewed based on the needs of the District and current selection criteria. 


    Step 3


    After application review, applicants may be scheduled for an eligibility appointment with Human Resources.  These individuals will receive an e-mail with detailed instructions, as well as the documents they will need to bring with them and/or upload into their application.



    Step 4 


    Applicants scheduled for an eligibility appointment must bring the requested documents to that appointment.  

    During the eligibility appointment, the applicant will review requested documents and complete the interview process, which includes:

    ·       A structured employment interview

    ·       Response to a series of job-related writing prompts (completed prior to interview appointment)

    ·       Presentation of a demonstration lesson


    Step 5 

    Upon completion of the eligibility process, successful candidates will be placed on their appropriate employment eligibility list for a period of one (1) year.


    Only candidates who are placed on an employment eligibility list may be hired by school-site administrators.
