This site provides information and updates about the efforts of LAUSD’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) to protect the students and staff of those schools impacted by the Exide Battery Plant.Background
Exide is a lead-acid battery recycling plant that has not operated since March 2014, when it was temporarily closed by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) for violations of air-quality regulations. Subsequently, the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) issued an order for the permanent closure of Exide in March 2015.
As part of the investigation to further assess potential impacts to the surrounding community, the DTSC ordered Exide to sample for lead at residential properties, parks, and schools in an expanded radius of 1.7 miles beyond the Exide facility fence line. This expanded area included 22 District schools. Reports for these schools are available below.
