  • Completion of Environmental Investigation and Clearance of all 22 LAUSD Campuses

    On January 19, 2017, OEHS received a letter from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), who concurred that the soil removal/replacement activities were successfully completed at the Lorena Street Elementary School / Extera Public School No. 2. Receipt of the letter marks the completion of the environmental investigation and clearance of all twenty-two LAUSD campuses within the DTSC’s established 1.7 mile radius from the Exide facility fence line. These investigations and subsequent soil removal activities, required at only at three of the campuses, were conducted with the oversight of the DTSC.

    OEHS received a letter from the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), who concurred that the soil removal/replacement activities have been successfully completed.  The perimeter fencing restricting access to the lawn/landscaped areas can also be removed; however, it will remain in place until the sod is fully established.

    OEHS is scheduled to receive the Lorena Street Phase 2 Soil Removal Activities report from its consultant (AECOM) by 1/13/2017.  Once received and reviewed by staff, a final version of the report will be forwarded to the Department of Toxics Substances Control (DTSC) for their concurrence and subsequent determination letter documenting completion of the District’s soil removal/replacement activities.

    Sod was replaced on 11/30/2016.  Semi-permanent fencing was installed on 12/02/2016. The fencing will remain in place until the lawn is established and abatement activities are deemed complete by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).

    Soil abatement activities were completed on 11/23/2016. Temporary fencing remains onsite and will be replaced with semi-permanent fencing following the installation of new sod on 11/30/2016.

    Soil Abatement activities are scheduled to commence at Lorena Street ES on 11/19/2016 with removal/replacement activities scheduled for completion on 11/23/2016.

    OEHS received a letter from the Department of Toxic Substances Control, who concurred that the work has been successfully completed.  The perimeter fencing restricting access to the lawn/landscaped areas can also be removed; however, it has remained in place to ensure the sod gets fully established.

    Soil/landscape removal activities at the landscaped area at Rowan Ave School commenced on 10/1/16 and were completed on 10/3/16. Sod was installed on 10/5/16. The fencing will remain in place until the sod is established.

    Soil from the one affected tree well has been replaced and the temporary fencing has been taken down. The District is working on scheduling the removal of soil in the larger fenced grass area. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the Thanksgiving break.
