48 Los Angeles Unified Magnets Receive National Recognition
Surpasses Previous Los Angeles Unified Record for Number of Schools Recognized for Academic Performance
Los Angeles, CA (Jan. 25, 2024) – Recognizing outstanding academic excellence and innovation, the Magnet Schools of America has awarded 48 Los Angeles Unified programs with National Merit Awards – surpassing Los Angeles Unified previous record-setting year in 2023 of 40 winning programs.
“Once again, Los Angeles Unified continues to lead the way,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Forty-eight of our extraordinary magnet programs – a new record for us – have received national recognition for the rigorous curriculum and real-world experience they provide.”
Magnet Schools of America’s National Merit Awards program recognizes the top magnet schools in the United States for sustained excellence in academic performance, innovation and an ongoing commitment to providing an excellent educational experience.
Four Los Angeles Unified programs are also 2024 finalists for the overall best magnet program in the country.
“We are so proud of our amazing programs throughout the entire District,” Superintendent Carvalho continued. “This honor reflects the passion and commitment of our dedicated educators and staff who inspire our students each and every day.”
Los Angeles Unified offers a comprehensive magnet program that provides students with rigorous theme-based instruction based on specific fields of interest encompassing all sectors of society, including business, communication arts, enriched studies, liberal arts, public service, science/technology/engineering/math and visual and performing arts. The program also offers opportunities for gifted and highly gifted students.
“Congratulations to all of our exceptional magnet programs across Los Angeles Unified and especially in Board District 5,” Board President Jackie Goldberg said. “This recognition is a testament to the extraordinary things that happen in our classrooms every single day. We share this honor with our dedicated teachers, administrators and staff.”
“I am overjoyed to see that 48 Los Angeles Unified magnet schools are nationally recognized with National Merit Awards because of their innovation and academic performances,” Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “I especially want to give a shout-out to the schools in Board District 3 – Hale Charter Academy, Mayall Academy, Porter Middle School, Balboa Magnet, Vintage Magnet, Cleveland Charter High School, Kennedy High School, North Hollywood High School Zoo Magnet, Robert Frost Middle School, and Van Nuys High School. Congratulations to all staff, students, and parents who contributed to this amazing achievement. You have made Los Angeles Unified very proud.”
Los Angeles Unified’s magnet program provides students with real-world industry experience at the elementary and secondary level, allowing students to foster industry connections within their community at an early age with ongoing partnerships with community and industry organizations. The District has 331 magnet programs with nearly 89,000 students in attendance from K-12.
“Our extraordinary magnets continue to shine and highlight the broad scope of academic excellence and our thematic programs,” Board Member George McKenna said. “We are especially proud of Hamilton High School for continuing to be a leader in performing arts education.”
“Congratulations to these standout programs and to the people who make them great – our teachers, magnet coordinators, staff, students and families,” Board Member Dr. Rocio Rivas said. “Our magnet programs deliver unique educational opportunities, allowing students to focus on a meaningful path of learning that resonates with their personal interests."
“We are thrilled to celebrate the many programs that have received recognition by the Magnet Schools of America, including at Fairfax High, Hollywood High, Melrose Elementary, Open Elementary, Reseda High, and Rosewood Elementary within Board District 4,” Board Member Nick Melvoin said. “LA Unified continues to provide incredible and innovative options for our families and students.”
“Congratulations to our wonderful Los Angeles Unified Magnets on this recognition,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “I’m particularly excited to see so many of our great programs in Board District 6 recognized across a variety of thematic learning pathways. Thank you to our educators and staff at each of these schools for working every day to support the success of students.”
“Congratulations to our 48 outstanding Los Angeles Unified magnet programs being recognized nationally – especially our Board District 7 schools, including my middle school alma mater,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “I am proud of the creative and courageous efforts of our educators, staff, and families that have resulted in innovative educational experiences for our magnet students. We are surely getting ready for the world!”
