Statement from Los Angeles Unified

Los Angeles, CA (June 2, 2023) – Los Angeles Unified and two of our largest labor partners -- SEIU Local 99 and United Teachers Los Angeles -- have reached an agreement on work-year calendars for school years 2023-24 and 2024-25. The revised calendars prioritize student learning, support for working families and the needs of Los Angeles Unified employees.

The calendars include a three-week winter break for the next two years, while adding three instructional days to each of the years in order to make up for the instructional days lost during the strike in March 2023. Additionally, the calendars include a voluntary Winter Recess Academy during the first week of winter break to provide targeted instruction and enrichment, meals and supervision for students. In implementing the instructional calendars, we remain committed to mitigating learning loss and recognizing economic challenges faced by many of our families.

Under the tentative agreement, the first day of school for 2023-2024 will be Monday, August 14. Winter break will begin on Monday, December 18. The Winter Recess Academy will take place on December 18, 19 and 20. School will resume on Monday, January 8, 2024. The last day of school will be Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

In addition to reaching agreement on the work calendars for the next two school years, and in the continued interest of promoting harmonious labor relations, the District and our labor partners have reached resolution on charges pending before the Public Employment Relations Board.

In all decisions, student learning and the well-being of students, families and employees are the District’s top priorities. We are confident that this agreement supports our north star – ensuring every child in the District has the instruction and support needed to graduate ready for the world.
