Los Angeles Unified Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin Hosts
Third-Annual College Signing Day at CSUDH
CARSON, CA ( May 1, 2023) — Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin and her team hosted the third-annual Board District 7 College Signing Day at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH).
The event was held on April 29 and celebrated college-bound seniors, and encouraged all Pre-K to 11th grade students to follow their college and career dreams. More than 500 seniors from 17 high schools from South Mid-City to San Pedro announced their college choice to fellow classmates, families, staff, and community members.
“Our third annual BD7 College Signing Day was incredible! We celebrated hundreds of our graduating seniors announcing their college and career selections from Cal States to UCs to community colleges to the Ivy League to the military,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “There’s nothing more fulfilling as an educator than seeing hundreds of elementary and middle school students on a college campus envisioning their very real potential as future college students. Every child deserves every opportunity to thrive in the college and career of their dreams and we can’t wait to see how they change our world!”
“This is a huge day celebrating our graduating seniors – the true academic stars – who are successfully transitioning into colleges,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Los Angeles Unified has a rich legacy of students who attended our schools, walked through our halls, sat in our classrooms, laughed with their peers, cried with our teachers and changed the world. I believe that each and every one of the Class of 2023 is capable of making a lasting and positive impact in everything they do.”
More than 2,000 students and families joined College Signing Day to participate in college tours, giveaways, and meet with representatives from colleges nationwide. They participated in various activities, including giveaways and photobooths, while also learning about the community resources and organizations that can support them.
The day was filled with excitement, while enjoying food, they heard from special guest speakers, and learned about joining student organizations in college to motivate scholars to further their education.
“Choosing a university is a pivotal moment in a person’s life, and we congratulate these young men and women on their pursuit of higher education,” CSUDH President Thomas A. Parhamn said. “Every child deserves to envision themselves attending college, and these graduating seniors are serving as excellent role models and inspiration for each other as well as for the next generation.”
“I want to extend my sincerest congratulations to all of the graduating seniors who have committed to continuing their education in college,” Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) said. “This is an important milestone in their lives, and it's wonderful that they are being recognized for their hard work and dedication. Investing in our students' future is crucial for building strong communities and a thriving economy. I hope this event inspires more students to pursue higher education, trade schools or community college so they can achieve their dreams. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors and their families, and best wishes for a bright future!”
Student performances from San Pedro High School and Phineas Banning High School helped create a festive day, along with dancing teams from Wilmington Middle School and King/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama started celebrating College Signing Day at the White House as part of her Reach Higher Initiative. Board District 7 remains committed to keeping that tradition alive.
