L.A. Unified Board Member Nick Melvoin Sworn In for Second Term Serving Board District 4

LOS ANGELES, CA – December 13, 2022 – L.A. Unified Board Member Nick Melvoin was sworn in today, following his reelection outright in June, to represent the students, families, and school communities of Board District 4.

First elected in 2017, Melvoin has served as Board Vice President for the majority of his term, championing a kids-first approach to leading the District, through multiple Superintendent transitions, wildfire seasons, a teachers’ strike, and an unprecedented global pandemic. While doing everything possible to keep kids learning, families fed, and our school communities healthy and safe during the COVID-19 crisis, L.A. Unified also expanded digital connectivity, passed a $7B facilities bond, the largest in the nation, restored District credit ratings to the top tier, and implemented cost-saving measures to put more money back into classrooms. The past five years have seen a rise in graduation rates, an expansion of universal pre-kindergarten seats, increased transparency through the Open Data platform, and, as pandemic recovery efforts continue, L.A. Unified was the only large school district to improve student scores nationally in 2022.

“I look forward to another term of putting kids first and creating a future where every child graduates ready for the world,” said Melvoin. “Our work continues to keep boosting academic achievement, expanding more equitable college and career access and readiness, greening and upgrading campus facilities, and supporting the success of our students, families, employees, and school communities.”

Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 as Vice President of the LA Unified Board of Education. Nick’s election to the Board in May of 2017 follows a career fighting for our city’s schoolchildren as a teacher, attorney, and community advocate. He believes that together, with the right leadership, we can ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity to succeed. Board District 4 includes the communities of Brentwood, Del Rey, Encino, Hancock Park, Hollywood, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Reseda, Tarzana, Topanga, Westchester, West Hollywood, Westwood, Woodland Hills, and Venice.
