Los Angeles Unified Appoints Pedro Salcido as Deputy Superintendent of Business Services and Operations

Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 16, 2022) – Yesterday, the Board of Education approved the appointment of Pedro Salcido as Deputy Superintendent of Business Services and Operations for Los Angeles Unified.

“I am excited about strengthening the work in the District’s business and operations divisions that contribute daily to the education of the hundreds of thousands of students we serve every day here at Los Angeles Unified,” Mr. Salcido said. “The way we do our work is changing. We need to be more thoughtful and more purposeful in how we obtain, develop and provide services, as well as carefully manage the District’s multi-billion dollar budget. I am committed to delivering the products and services that best serve the varying needs of our students, employees and school communities.”

“Mr. Salcido’s personal dedication to students and our school communities is exemplary,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “We each have a place to serve and lead. Under Mr. Salcido’s leadership, I know Los Angeles Unified will reach the right targets by investing in strategies and programs to improve student achievement.”

Mr. Salcido most recently served as the Chief of Staff managing all District academic and nonacademic operations and activities, including District operations and initiatives, as well as serving as the Superintendent’s principal liaison to the Board of Education. In addition, Mr. Salcido oversaw the execution of all Los Angeles Unified policies and was  instrumental in the development of Superintendent Carvalho’s 100-Day Plan and Strategic Plan. Mr. Salcido has a demonstrated track record in expanding equitable programmatic and financial practices. Most notably, he served as the leading staff member who developed and implemented the District’s Student Equity Needs Index (SENI), an equity-based funding allocation that today has grown to distribute nearly $700 million to the neediest schools in Los Angeles Unified.

Mr. Salcido also served in several roles as the District’s Senior Executive Director of Finance and Policy and Director of Government Relations managing state, federal and local advocacy efforts and supervising internal and external efforts related to finance, labor negotiations and general board policies. He also led the District’s work on the initial development and implementation of Los Angeles Unified’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) for more than five years and because of his tireless work, established a system of common accountability and budget alignment with the LCAP Scorecard and broad community engagement efforts.

As a first-generation Mexican American son of immigrants and a first-generation high school and college graduate, Mr. Salcido often relies on his own lived experiences to connect with both the educational and personal experiences of the students we serve. He intends to listen often to the perspectives of staff, students and families to effectively contribute to the decisions that shape the daily experiences of Los Angeles students and families. Mr. Salcido holds a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and holds dual degrees in Politics and Latin American Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
