LAUSD Educator Wins National Teacher Award

Mr. David Crowley, a San Pedro High School Special Education teacher, has been awarded the 2015 National Association for Alternative Certification (NAAC) Outstanding Intern Award. The NAAC Award honors new educators who have been prepared through an alternative certification program. The LAUSD's District Intern (DI) Program, an alternative certification program, provides an ideal way for mature individuals with established professional and/or life experience to segue into teaching. With deep content knowledge and expertise, candidates teach in the classroom while simultaneously earning their teaching credential. In 2014, Mr. Crowley received the Michael McKibbin Outstanding Educator Award, while participating in LAUSD's District Intern Preliminary Education Specialist credential program. Currently, Mr. Crowley is continuing his professional growth and learning as a participant in LAUSD's Clear Education Specialist Induction Program (CESIP).

As Mr. Crowley explains, "The DI Program is great because it allows me to teach and learn at the same time, and the best education is an on-the-job-education. It takes into consideration my needs both financially and pragmatically. The courses work well because they are taught by Instructional Facilitators who have the theory and teaching experience in Special Education to support and guide us through the program. The participants in the cohort consist of people who are experiencing the same things as yourself. We are constantly problem-solving and growing professionally as teachers. And my DI Support Provider really helped me embrace the challenges of Special Education.”
