Air Quality Monitoring Data

  • To ensure the continued safety of our students, Los Angeles Unified has contracted with an environmental consultant to conduct two types of air-quality tests at Porter Ranch Community School and Castlebay Lane Charter.

Real-time sampling uses a hand-held monitor to determine if there is a health threat. It was conducted during the school day, a technician gathers samples from various sites around the campuses, both indoors and outside. The results are reported in parts per million (PPM) for methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulfide(H2S). Since Dec. 1, when we obtained the necessary equipment, we have also been testing for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. We were monitoring the results as they are received before sending them to a Certified Industrial Hygienist for review. This means the results will be posted the next working day.

We have also begun collecting data through the use of air-sampling canisters. The stainless-steel canisters are placed at indoor and outdoor sites around the schools, where they collect samples over an eight-hour period. The canisters are then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Because of the complexity of the test, it typically will take four days for the results of the canister tests to be posted.
