Get $1K to Create a Calming Area in Your Classroom

    Help your students build skills and learn ways to de-escalate! Submit a project to DonorsChoose.Org to create a Calming Area in your classroom. A calm area is a designated space with the sole intent of being a safe space for a student to go to when they feel their emotions are running too high and they need to regain their emotional and physical control.  A Calming Area is a useful strategy to include in the classroom that helps students process an experience or de-escalate when they are having a difficult time. Beginning December 2022, LAUSD will fund projects that are worth up to $1,000 in DonorsChoose.Org that are titled “Calming Area” for teachers and counselors to help create spaces and provide tools and resources that will help students build their skills by engaging in mindful activities like journaling, drawing, breathing, etc. 

     

    600 projects will be funded on a first-come basis depending on the date of project submission and posting. The deadline to submit a project was March 31, 2023; however, given that we have received more projects than we can fund, that deadline is no longer valid.     Follow these easy steps to create your Calming Area and get your project submitted:

     

          1. Determine an Area (get ideas on how to incorporate the space

              within your instructional program HERE)

          2. Create your list of items to purchase (get ideas HERE):

          3. Create a project in DonorsChoose.Org

          4. Title the project “Calming Area”

          5. Select items to purchase

          6. Submit Project

     

    The first 600 projects submitted will get funded within 2-4 weeks of submission. *Check HERE to see a list of funded projects.
