What is SOGIE (also known as LGBTQ+)
SOGIE stands for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression. This term recognizes all sexual orientations and gender identities, including heterosexual and cisgender.
Good teaching includes helping students process their thoughts and feelings about the world and creating space for them to bring their full selves to school. This document, Courageous Conversations with Students, provides tools, lesson plans, and practical advice for facilitating dialogues with students about power, privilege, oppression, and resistance. They were adapted by the Office of Human Relations, Diversity & Equity. Click here to view this resource.

Out for Safe Schools
OUT for Safe Schools is a nationally recognized, annual District campaign, which highlights the District’s commitment to providing inclusive, LGBTQ-affirming environments in all schools and offices. When Los Angeles Unified School District launched a groundbreaking “OUT for Safe Schools” initiative, LAUSD employees were encouraged to wear badges that identify them as allies of the LGBT Community in an effort to make the schools a safer, more welcoming place. The initiative sought to foster an environment of acceptance not just in classrooms, but also on the field. Athletic coaches across the district were provided with lanyards and whistles to help them "blow the whistle on hate" and create safe sporting environments and activities at schools. The HRDE team still has these badges available to send out to our school communities. Please reach out to the HRDE staff member in your Local District for more information!
In recognition of LGBT History Month in October, LGBT “Heroes and Holidays” Calendars depicting significant people and events in LGBT history were generously created and printed by the Los Angeles LGBT Center, and are being distributed throughout the District for display and use as an instructional tool. An electronic version is posted here, along with LGBT History Month Suggested Activities and LGBT History Month Resources. We hope that these resources and materials will assist all school sites and offices with on-going efforts to maintain and enhance inclusive, LGBTQ-affirming learning and working environments.

Fall 2020 National Coming Out Day/Out for Safe Schools Campaign
The 2020 theme for national LGBT History Month was Proud to Be Me... The purpose of this campaign was to encourage and empower our students to recognize all of the reasons they have to be proud of who they are. Building confidence is one critical way to improve overall academic and social engagement. Primary and secondary students were invited to submit personal writings or artwork reflecting on what it means to them to be proud of who they are. Please reach out to the HRDE staff member in your Local District for more information about this campaign.
