CLIMATE AND CULTURE

  • Leaders with high staff attendance create a environment in which staff want to attend

“Our culture has been constructed through many avenues, over time... supportive school leadership that follows through on promises -distributed leadership and collaborative decision-making -teacher community-building and recognition events -support for classroom discipline issues -staff Council circles.”

LA Unified leaders with the highest staff attendance reported that a positive culture and climate and high morale supported high staff attendance.

    • Schools and offices should be a place where people want to work. Teamwork and collaboration are key to a thriving staff.
    • Effective schools and offices celebrate together, not only recognizing attendance, but holidays, employee milestones, and may offer token incentives to show appreciation for a job well done.
    • Help staff feel their work is important and assign personally stimulating work. Make staff performance expectations clear so employees can see their contribution to school or office improvement goals.
    • Show authentic appreciation and recognition for employees’ work. Treat employees fairly and provide support during challenging times. Keep communication open, honest and transparent. Be a positive role model, exhibiting high attendance and remain positive even in challenging times.
