ENGAGE

  • Leaders with high staff attendance communicate and work directly with employees to improve attendance.

“Meet with staff who had poor attendance, providing assistance and guidance and a conference memo.”

    Strategies:

    • Even schools and offices with high staff attendance have employees who are absent and/or find it challenging to meet the district target attendance rate.
    • When employees are absent, welcome them back individually, making sure he/she is recognized as back on the job. Inform the absent employee he/she was missed by colleagues who may have had to pick up extra duties during the absence.
    • Counsel staff who are near or below the 96% minimum attendance target.
    • Ensure that employees take steps to have eligible absences designated as FMLA/kin care. Provide self-care and other resources.
    • For staff with chronic or frequent absence, follow through on progressive discipline, and consider high absence to trigger a required employee evaluation.
