Attendance Matters
Staff attendance is vital to LAUSD’s success at providing cohesive and comprehensive services that directly impact student instruction and the stability in ensuring seamless school operations. Staff attendance fosters a culture of accountability and collectiveness where students and staff thrive. It aids in fulfilling school operational needs, which are inclusive of our commitments to our surrounding community partners. By being present and engaged, employees can help create a reliable and effective educational community.

What is the District’s attendance policy?
In 2004, the LAUSD Board of Education adopted an Employee Attendance Policy to assist in maintaining regular attendance. The policy establishes the following expectations for District employees:
- Maintain regular attendance, avoid absenteeism, and work every hour assigned
- Be at your workstations on time every working day
- Comply with legal restrictions, LAUSD policy and procedures, and the respective collective bargaining rules regarding reporting an absence and providing appropriate documentation
- Supervisors are expected to explain and insist upon regular attendance, maintain accurate employee attendance records, monitor employee attendance, provide performance feedback to employees, and enforce all employee attendance policies and standards through employee performance evaluations and discipline processes
Please be advised that District administrators may establish attendance expectations for District staff that are suitable to fulfill the operational needs of their assigned cost centers.
Staff Attendance Metrics
What is the District’s staff attendance goal for the 2024-2025 school year?
LAUSD's staff attendance goal is that 75% of District staff maintain a 96% attendance rate.
How is the attendance rate calculated for an employee?
The formula to calculate an employee’s attendance rate is: worked hours divided by workable hours, minus protected hours.
What is defined as worked hours versus workable hours, and protected hours?
Worked Hours: The reported time an employee actually worked.
Workable Hours: The number of days an employee is scheduled to work each year (refer to the employee’s Basis Calendar) multiplied by the number of hours an employee is scheduled to work each day minus paid time off
Protected Hours: Reported leave(s) that are protected by State and Federal statutes (i.e., FMLA, CFRA, PDL, bereavement, kin care, reproductive loss, etc.)
