Middle School Science (6-8)
During grades 6–8, students will form deeper connections between concepts previously learned in grades K–5, such as collecting evidence and drawing conclusions, understanding relationships between objects, and critical thinking that leads to designing effective solutions for problems.
Upon completion of grades 6–8, students should have a deeper understanding of:
- Physical and chemical interactions that affect the world around us;
- Factors that affect organism survival and reproduction;
- Factors that influence the Earth and our solar system; and
- How to optimize design solutions.
Progressions Within the Next Generation Science Standards
Following the vision of A Framework for K-12 Science Education, the NGSS are intended to increase coherence in K-12 science education. The following excerpts from the Framework explains the approach in more detail:
- Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs)
- Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs)
- Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs)

Implementation of Middle School Next Generation Science Standards Courses
The district has selected the Integrated Model described in the California Science Framework (2017) to replace the current 6-8 core science courses. All Middle Schools and Span Schools are expected to select the new integrated science courses from MiSiS for the 2019-2019 school year.
Here are the titles and numbers of the new integrated science courses for the middle grades:
- Integrated Science 6AB: 360301/360302
- Integrated Science 7: 360303
- Integrated Science 8AB: 360305/360308
Middle School Science Instructional Materials
- A draft of science curriculum maps aligned to the California Next Generation Science Standards is now available for grades 6-8. The curriculum maps are organized as the CA Framework in dividing the science standards into 4 instructional segments for each middle grade described in the California Science Framework (2017).
