LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Unified officials cut the ribbon Thursday on a $184 million modernization of the Huntington Park High School campus. Originally opened in 1909, the school has undergone a major transformation that preserves its historic character while adding modern academic, athletic and outdoor learning spaces.
New additions include a 45,000-square-foot gymnasium, a 3,400-square-foot pool facility and two classroom buildings. The project also included upgrades to HVAC, lighting, ceilings, and interior and exterior finishes; a renovated central courtyard; and a new outdoor learning environment with a stormwater-capture area – a key element in the District’s ongoing efforts to promote eco-sustainability in the face of climate change. The project represents an approximately $184 million investment of voter-approved bond funds.
“The excitement we are feeling today underscores our District’s renewed focus on the schoolhouse as the center of all that we do,” said Superintendent Andrés E. Chait. “The quality of a student’s learning environment—including state-of-the-art facilities—is a critical part of our commitment to delivering the strongest possible educational experience. Today, we celebrate providing the Spartan community with dynamic, purposeful spaces that support great teaching, inspire learning and help students grow, create and succeed for generations to come.”
The project’s completion comes as Los Angeles Unified continues its work to ensure students have access to strong academic programs, meaningful opportunities and well-resourced learning environments.
“Every student and staff member deserves a safe, welcoming and well-equipped place to learn and work,” said Board Member Karla Griego, whose district includes Huntington Park High School. “This $184 million investment honors the daily work of our educators, school staff and families, while creating a dynamic learning environment where students can thrive. When we invest in our schools, we are investing in the academic, social, and emotional well-being of our students and strengthening the communities around them.”
The Huntington Park High School modernization is part of a much larger investment across Los Angeles Unified. With more than $9.7 billion in facilities projects currently underway across the district, Los Angeles Unified continues to modernize campuses and create welcoming learning environments where students can thrive.
