Los Angeles Unified Board Adopts 2026–2030 Strategic Plan Focused on Student Success and Innovation

LOS ANGELES (June 23, 2026) – Today, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education unanimously adopted the District’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, establishing a clear roadmap to accelerate student achievement, expand opportunity, and ensure every student graduates Ready for the World.

The Strategic Plan builds on the District’s recent academic progress and outlines a bold vision centered on equity, high-quality instruction, and whole-child support. It prioritizes measurable outcomes in student achievement, including improved literacy and math proficiency, increased graduation rates, and expanded college and career readiness pathways.

“This Strategic Plan reflects our unwavering commitment to student success,” Acting Superintendent Andrés E. Chait said. “We are building on the progress we’ve made and setting a clear direction to ensure every student has access to the opportunities and support they need to succeed.”

The plan focuses on several key priorities, including:

  • Academic Excellence – Accelerate student achievement by strengthening instruction, expanding access to rigorous coursework, and ensuring every student is prepared for college, career, and life.
  • Joy and Wellness – Foster safe, supportive, and engaging school environments that prioritize student well-being, mental health, and a sense of belonging.
  • Engagement and Collaboration – Build strong partnerships with families, students, educators, and communities to support shared responsibility for student success.
  • Operational Effectiveness – Deliver high-quality, efficient, and responsive services that support schools and maximize resources in service of students.
  • Investing in Staff – Recruit, develop, and retain a diverse, high-quality workforce by providing meaningful professional learning, support, and growth opportunities.

The Strategic Plan also emphasizes innovation across the District, including modernized curriculum, expanded early education, and new pathways in career technical education and adult learning.

Developed through extensive input from students, families, educators, and community stakeholders, the plan reflects a shared vision for the future of Los Angeles Unified.

As the District implements the 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, leaders will continue to align resources, monitor progress, and report transparently on outcomes to ensure goals are met.

"With our last strategic plan sunsetting, it is time for us to live up to newer, modern goals," said LAUSD Board President Scott M. Schmerelson. "We understand the challenge ahead of us, but even through the pandemic, our students and staff have found a way to elevate their level of learning. I know that I, along with my fellow board members, can count on our LAUSD community not only to reach but to exceed the standards that we have set forward with the passing of this strategic plan."

"Our Strategic Plan reflects a shared vision for the future of Los Angeles Unified, one where every student has the opportunity to succeed. By prioritizing academic excellence, joy and wellness, engagement and collaboration, operational effectiveness, and investing in staff, this roadmap will guide our work and strengthen outcomes for students in the years ahead," said Board Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas.

“This Strategic Plan reflects our unwavering commitment to student success,” Acting Superintendent Andrés E. Chait said. “We are building on the progress we’ve made and setting a clear direction to ensure every student has access to the opportunities and support they need to succeed.”

“Our strategic plan is essential to setting a clear vision and the roadmap to making that vision a reality. This updated plan builds on the progress we've made while helping ensure stability and accountability in the years ahead,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “It keeps us focused on improving outcomes, measuring progress, and ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in our schools.”

“I’m happy to support the 2026-2030 Strategic Plan, which gives us an opportunity to align our vision, budget, and goals to students' academic and social emotional wellness outcomes. Our plan also highlights goals to improve the way we support our school communities, especially our staff and families,” said Board Member Karla Griego. “Ensuring that we have clear, measurable goals will help us monitor progress, allocate resources effectively, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement for our students.”

“Our school district continues its important work to meet the needs of all students and families through the new Strategic Plan,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “Working together, we can continue building on the progress we’ve made over the past three years and ensure we are fulfilling the promise of a high-quality public education for every student.”

“Destination 2030 is our shared vision for the future of Los Angeles Unified and our commitment to ensuring every student graduates Ready for the World. Guided by the five pillars of Academic Excellence, Joy and Wellness, Engagement and Collaboration, Operational Effectiveness, and Investing in Staff, this Strategic Plan provides a roadmap for improving student outcomes, advancing equity, strengthening partnerships, and supporting the educators and staff who make student success possible,” said Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill.

"I am excited for the next four years as we continue advancing the important work to accelerate achievement, college and career pathways, and socio-emotional learning outlined in our 2026-2030 Strategic Plan," said Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin. "I look forward to building on the work to ensure all students achieve on grade level, our staff receive the support required to close opportunity gaps, and our families and communities have accessible and timely information to be true partners."
