Los Angeles Unified Schools Earn Multiple Statewide Honors from California Department of Education

LOS ANGELES (March 12, 2026) — A total of 83 schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District have received statewide recognition recently through multiple programs administered by the California Department of Education, highlighting strong academic outcomes and innovative student support programs across the District.

Among the honors, 73 Los Angeles Unified middle and high schools were named 2026 California Distinguished Schools, one of the state’s highest recognitions for public schools. The designation celebrates campuses demonstrating strong academic achievement and meaningful progress in improving student outcomes.

Established in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Program is one of the state’s most prestigious school recognitions, honoring campuses demonstrating strong academic achievement and meaningful progress in improving student outcomes. Schools are recognized in alternating years, with elementary schools eligible in odd-numbered years and middle and high schools eligible in even-numbered years.

In addition to the Distinguished Schools honors, Los Angeles Unified schools were also recognized by the state for programs focused on supporting students with diverse learning needs. A total of ten schools districtwide were named 2026 Model Continuation High Schools or Community Day Schools, recognizing exemplary programs that provide flexible academic pathways, counseling, and targeted supports for students working toward graduation.

“These recognitions reflect the dedication of our educators, staff and families who work every day to ensure students have access to the high-quality learning experiences that prepare them for college, careers and life,” Acting Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified Andrés E. Chait said.

The announcements add to a series of recent academic achievements across Los Angeles Unified. In recent months, the District has reported significant gains in Advanced Placement participation and performance, while also earning national recognition from the Magnet Schools of America, which honored numerous Los Angeles Unified campuses among the nation’s top magnet programs.

"Los Angeles Unified is honored to have so many of its schools recognized by the State Superintendent this year, including those named California Distinguished Schools as well as Model Continuation High Schools and Community Day Schools," Board President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “We continue to push for equitable and safe environments to ensure academic success throughout the district and close achievement gaps. Congratulations to all our schools, students, teachers, principals, and parents. This achievement is a reflection of their work and dedication."
