Acting Superintendent Andrés E. Chait Reaffirms Support for Immigrant Families and Respect for Labor Partners in First Superintendent’s Report
LOS ANGELES (March 10, 2026) — In his first Superintendent’s Report to the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education, Acting Superintendent Andrés E. Chait reaffirmed the District’s support for immigrant families and acknowledged deep respect for the work of the District’s labor partners.
During the Board meeting, Chait reflected on his first week in the role and emphasized the importance of remaining focused on students and school communities.
“The best part of the work is always being at schools with students and staff,” Chait said. “I’ve had the chance to visit a few campuses and meet with teachers, principals, students, and support staff. That is where the crux of the work lies, and I’m grateful to those communities for welcoming me.”
Chait also reaffirmed Los Angeles Unified’s longstanding commitment to supporting immigrant students and families, emphasizing that the District’s stance remains unchanged.
“Nothing has changed or will change during my time as acting superintendent in terms of our support for our immigrant communities,” Chait said. “Nothing has changed. Nothing will change. We stand with you.”
Chait shared that his commitment is also personal. His family immigrated to the United States from Chile in 1983, an experience that shaped his understanding of the challenges immigrant families face.
“I know the experience because my family lived it,” Chait said. “Please know that we stand with you, we will support you, and we will ensure that our campuses remain safe, secure, and welcoming environments for all of our students and staff.”
Los Angeles Unified continues to uphold policies and practices that protect student rights and ensure schools remain safe and supportive places for learning.
Chait also addressed the District’s labor partners, recognizing the essential role employees play in supporting students and schools across Los Angeles Unified.
“I come from a place of deep respect for the work that you do,” Chait said. “As someone who has served as a teacher, principal, and in a number of roles with the District, I understand that you are the backbone of this organization. The work simply does not happen at schools or offices without you. My commitment is to approach our work together with transparency, honesty, and dialogue.”
Over the past week, Chait said he has been meeting with labor leaders and looks forward to continued engagement in the days ahead.
