Governor Newsom Commends Los Angeles Unified and Superintendent Carvalho in 2026 State of the State Address

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In his 2026 State of the State address today, Governor Gavin Newsom publicly recognized the exceptional progress and leadership of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Highlighting the district’s significant academic gains, Governor Newsom praised Los Angeles Unified. He specifically commended Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho for his leadership in guiding the country's second-largest school system through historic improvements in student achievement.

“The District is outpacing statewide progress,” Governor Newsom said in remarks delivered during the address. “They're exceeding pre-pandemic levels in every category and reaching the highest levels recorded since the current state assessments were launched a decade ago. Under his leadership, that's happening in the nation's second largest school district.”

The Governor also noted the contribution to the progress being made by Los Angeles Unified teachers, classified employees, and District parents.

The Governor’s citation of Los Angeles Unified’s progress comes as statewide student performance has shown meaningful gains and as targeted supports, such as expanded early literacy and math interventions, continue to drive improvement in core subject areas.

Superintendent Carvalho, who was unanimously reappointed by the Los Angeles Unified Board in 2025, has championed strategic reforms focused on equity, academic excellence, and transformative district initiatives that elevate outcomes for all students.

The District’s progress reflects the impact of aligned state investments in early childhood education, literacy, and community schools, priorities underscored by Governor Newsom moments earlier in his address. Los Angeles Unified remains committed to partnering with the state to expand opportunity, strengthen learning, and deliver lasting results for students and families.
