Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Approves Recognition of January as National Mentoring Month
LOS ANGELES (Dec. 16, 2025) – Today, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education approved the recognition of January as National Mentoring Month. The District commits to prioritizing the importance of mentoring as a key strategy in cultivating leadership and confidence in our students as we prepare our graduates to be ready for the world.
The resolution was authored by Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill and co-sponsored by Board President Scott Schmerelson, Board Vice President Dr. Rocio Rivas, and Board Member Kelly Gonez.
“Mentorship helps ensure our LAUSD students are ready for the world. When students have trusted adults who guide, support, and connect learning to real-world opportunities, they gain the confidence and skills needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond,” said Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill.
“During National Mentoring Month, we honor the mentors who show up every day for our students — listening, guiding, and believing in them, sometimes before they believe in themselves,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Mentorship changes lives, and we are grateful to the educators, staff, and community members who help our students see their potential and shape their futures.”
"Los Angeles Unified is not just a place for academic excellence; it is also a community where friendships and collaboration thrive,” said Board President Scott M. Schmerelson. “Through programs like Beyond the Bell, Black Student Achievement Plan, and others, we continue to invest in partnerships with various organizations throughout Los Angeles. This ensures that all students have access to programs that enhance their social interactions. It is through mentoring that our students will develop into the leaders of tomorrow.”
“At LA Unified, mentoring is essential and it is a powerful equity strategy,” said Board Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas. “From Beyond the Bell to GEAR UP, these relationships help students navigate school, plan for their futures, and feel they truly belong.”
“We are proud to recognize January 2026 as National Mentoring Month. Mentoring not only changes lives, but opens doors for our young people and strengthens our community,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “We urge our federal, state, and local partners to continue investing in the mentoring and college-access programs our students rely on. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to expanding and supporting these vital opportunities so every student can realize their full potential and graduate ready to succeed.”
“Mentoring transforms lives by giving every student access to guidance, encouragement, and opportunity,” said Board Member Karla Griego. “By committing to expand mentoring programs, we empower youth, strengthen our communities, and help every young person reach their full potential.”
“Mentoring gives students more than guidance—it gives them confidence, connection, and a belief in their own potential, said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “With the recognition of National Mentoring Month, we are making connections that can be transformative for students.”
“Having been both a mentee and a mentor, I’m reminded of our responsibility as leaders to ensure our scholars have access to meaningful mentorship that supports both their academic success and social-emotional well-being, said Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin. It provides guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging that can shape their confidence and future. I’m proud of our district for making mentorship a priority to uplift our students to become confident leaders ready for the world!”
