Philanthropic Partners Commit More Than $11 Million to Advance Los Angeles Unified’s Priority Schools

Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 13, 2025) – Showing a powerful commitment to the future of Los Angeles students, Los Angeles Unified and the LAUSD Education Foundation today announced $11 million in investments from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, Ballmer Group, and The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation.

These investments, made through the LAUSD Education Foundation—an independent 501(c)(3) relaunched to advance opportunity and innovation across the District—will accelerate the success of Los Angeles Unified’s Priority Schools initiative, expand evidence-based programs, and drive equity and instructional innovation across the nation’s second-largest school district.

“This moment represents a profound vote of confidence in the students of Los Angeles Unified,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “At a time when public education stands at a crossroads, these transformational investments from The Broad Foundation, Ballmer Group, and The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation affirm that our schools—and our students—are worth investing in. This philanthropic gift will accelerate innovation, expand opportunity, and help to ensure that every student in Los Angeles has access to the kind of education that transforms lives and communities.”

This investment comes at a time when Los Angeles Unified has made great strides in student achievement, with students performing at record-high levels on the 2025 California Assessments of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Results show that all Los Angeles Unified student groups outpaced their peers statewide in terms of their rate of improvement from the prior school year. Students not only surpassed 2024 results but also outperformed pre-pandemic levels from 2018–19.

“This historic partnership demonstrates that when systems, educators, and philanthropy align, student success follows,” LAUSD Education Foundation Executive Director Sadie Stockdale Jefferson said. “Together, we’re proving what works—and building the foundation for what’s next.”

Statements from Partners

“More than ever, our young people need public schools to be places of inspiration, support and relevant instruction,” Gerun RIley, President of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation said. “Under Superintendent Carvalho’s leadership, LAUSD has identified innovations that propel low-performing schools into strong cultures of teaching, learning and continuous improvement. Those investments must continue—and expand across the district.”

“With strong district leadership and consistent data-driven implementation, schools can make real progress for kids,” Nina Revoyr, Executive Director, Los Angeles & National Public Safety at Ballmer Group said. “This investment is about scaling what’s already working in classrooms across Los Angeles—ensuring every student has access to the instruction and support they need to thrive.”

A Renewed Partnership Between Philanthropy and LAUSD

This announcement, and the recently relaunched LAUSD Education Foundation, reflect a continued commitment between public education and philanthropy in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Unified combines stable leadership with a clear, districtwide strategy for sustained improvement.

These contributions from The Broad Foundation, Ballmer, and Lorre will enable Los Angeles Unified to accelerate progress in the following areas:

  • Expanded support for students with greatest needs
  • Innovation in teaching practices and curriculum
  • Additional social-emotional and wraparound services
  • Equity-driven programs in under-resourced schools

By combining public funding with philanthropic investments, the District can maintain momentum, protect core services, and pilot promising models at scale to multiply its effectiveness and reach.

Investments in Priority Schools
Over the past two years, Priority Schools have become proof points for districtwide improvement. This philanthropic investment will strengthen school-based instructional leadership and data-driven decision-making at all levels from principals to teachers to interventionists.

The $11 million investment will expand the reach of proven strategies across the district’s highest-need campuses by:

  • Increasing access to high-quality instructional materials and digital learning tools;
  • Expanding tutoring and small-group instruction in literacy, math, and science;
  • Enhancing professional learning and coaching for teachers, counselors, and administrators; and
  • Strengthening student support and enrichment programs that foster whole-child success.

Onward Together
These gifts are a recognition of the value of public education and a sign of public trust. In partnership with philanthropists, educators, families, and communities, Los Angeles Unified is building a future where every child receives what they deserve—a high-quality, equitable public education.
