Los Angeles (Oct. 14, 2025) - Los Angeles Unified Board President Schmerelson sponsored a resolution that declared October as National Principals Month districtwide.

The resolution introduces a framework to educate high school students about their workplace rights. Many young workers face discrimination due to inadequate training and limited awareness of their rights. This resolution aims to address this issue by providing students with the necessary information regarding their workplace protections.

“Principals and assistant principals deserve recognition and our support, especially after the role they played in the Smarter Balanced Assessment score increase,” said Board President Scott M. Schmerelson. “Every principal is a local leader in their respective community, responding to parent concerns, balancing the needs of their staff, and establishing a positive school climate. This goes beyond simple administrative work. Our principals set the standard for LA Unified’s position in the City and beyond to cement their school’s place as a shining light in their local community.”

“Principals are the heartbeat of our schools — the leaders who set the tone, nurture the culture, and inspire excellence in both students and staff,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “During National Principals Month, we honor their vision, courage, and relentless commitment to our communities. Their leadership transforms challenges into opportunities and ensures that every child in Los Angeles Unified has access to a world-class education.”

"Principals are the heart of our schools that guide our students, staff, and families through challenges and triumphs alike," said Board Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas. "I’m deeply grateful for their service and unwavering dedication to our District’s mission."

“Having worked in a school for over two decades, I’ve seen firsthand the important role principals play,” said Board Member Sherlett Hendy-Newbill. “They bring heart and strength to the students, staff, and community through their leadership, dedication and commitment.”

“Principals play a vital role in shaping the foundation of our schools,” said Board Member Karla Griego. “Their role is to set the vision for their learning communities, cultivate cultures of collaboration, inclusion, and academic excellence, and build strong partnerships that extend beyond the classroom. Through their leadership, our schools become safe spaces where students, families, and communities can learn and thrive together.”

“This month and throughout the year, I’m proud to recognize and celebrate our incredible principals,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “Every day I see the amazing work of our school leaders in supporting high-quality instruction, creating warm and welcoming school environments, and working in partnership with families on behalf of students. I appreciate their hard work and dedication to our students, staff, and families and will continue to partner with our BD6 principals to ensure their voices are heard and that our system works to support our leaders as people and as professionals.”

“Thank you, principals, for leading with heart, vision, and dedication every single day,” said Board Member Tanya Ortiz-Franklin. “This month and all year long we celebrate you and the monumental work you do to make our schools stronger to help our students and staff thrive!”

“Every day, and especially during National Principals Month, we honor and celebrate our principals who are the backbone of Los Angeles Unified,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “Their dedication, compassion, and leadership are what make our schools thrive. We are grateful for the Association of California School Administrators Region 16 and the Associated Administrators of Los Angeles/Teamsters Local 2010 for their partnership and advocacy in supporting and developing strong leaders in our communities.”
