LOS ANGELES (Sept. 5, 2025) – Los Angeles Unified today announced that 64 schools across the District have been named among “America’s Healthiest Schools” for 2025 by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation – doubling the number of honorees from last year’s 32 schools.
These schools are among 1,120 K–12 schools nationwide that are being recognized for their commitment to advancing whole child health. This national recognition highlights the District’s ongoing commitment to fostering environments where students can thrive physically, socially, and emotionally.
“Healthy schools are thriving schools,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “By nearly doubling the number of schools recognized this year, Los Angeles Unified is proving that when we invest in the whole child, we unlock potential in the classroom and beyond. I am proud of our educators, staff, and families who made this recognition possible.”
Los Angeles Unified schools recognized this year reflect the District’s deep commitment to supporting student wellness through:
-
Nutrition: Providing access to fresh, balanced meals that fuel learning.
-
Physical Activity: Expanding opportunities for movement and fitness during the school day.
-
Mental Health & Well-Being: Strengthening counseling, mindfulness, and social-emotional supports.
-
Staff & Family Engagement: Creating inclusive environments where healthy practices extend beyond the classroom.
“For so many of our students, our schools are their home away from home,” Board President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “This is why we make sure that we have all the supports that students need to keep their bodies healthy and their minds ready to learn: healthy food, physical activity, socio-emotional supports and caring, and qualified school teams. We are so proud to receive this recognition.”
Supported by Del Monte Foods, Kaiser Permanente, and Kohl’s Cares, Healthier Generation’s annual award program recognizes schools for implementing evidence-based policies and practices to support academic success and lifelong well-being. Schools are recognized in nine health-related topic areas: Strengthening Social-Emotional Health & Learning, Cultivating Staff Well-Being, Increasing Family & Community Engagement, Improving Nutrition & Food Access, Implementing Local School Wellness Policy, Bolstering Physical Education & Activity, Enriching Health Education, Promoting Tobacco-Free Schools and Supporting School Health Services.
"Schools play a crucial role in positively shaping the health and well-being of our nation's youth, and they deserve national recognition for their outstanding efforts," said Kathy Higgins, CEO of Healthier Generation. "The dedication of school leaders, educators, and staff to support the physical, emotional, and academic needs of their students is nothing short of extraordinary. Their commitment is creating healthier futures for children and communities alike."
