LOS ANGELES (Sept.16, 2025) – Amid continued federal attacks against immigrant communities, in particular Latino/a/e communities, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education today celebrated and stood in solidarity with Latine students, families, and communities. The resolution honoring Latine Heritage Month was authored by Board Member Kelly Gonez and cosponsored by the entire Board. Students from the Los Angeles School of Global Studies at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex, Garfield High School, Eagle Rock High School, and Maywood Academy performed as part of the celebration.
“With the federal government working every day to terrorize and abduct our immigrant families from our streets, erase Latine heritage and culture from our classrooms, and foment xenophobia, L.A. Unified stands apart,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez. “We celebrate our cultural diversity for the amazing benefit it is, and we remain steadfastly committed to schools that welcome, support, and celebrate students of all races, languages, cultures, and without regard to immigration status.”
“Throughout Latino Heritage Month we celebrate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions that shape our communities and our schools,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “At Los Angeles Unified, we honor this legacy by uplifting student voices, embracing cultural pride, and ensuring that every child sees their identity reflected and valued in their education.”
“LAUSD will not be afraid to celebrate the diversity of our communities, and we proudly celebrate Latino Heritage Month,” said Board President Scott Schmerelson. “I understand that many of our students and their families are going through challenges at this time. Especially those who come from a Latino or Spanish-speaking background. Our commitment to them and to all students is firmer than ever. The District is expanding mental health resources and bringing community partners together so our students and their families can live without fear.”
"With nearly 80% of our students identifying as Latino, celebrating Latino Heritage Month is about recognizing our students’ brilliance, culture, and resilience. We recommit to ensuring that their histories, languages, and contributions are reflected in every classroom, every month of the year," said Board Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas.
“Over 70 percent of District families identify as Latino/a/e,” said Board Member Sherlett Newbill. “ Latino/a/e Heritage Month is a time to highlight, honor, celebrate, embrace, and learn the histories, cultures and contributions of people from across the diaspora and ensure that our students see themselves reflected in the many achievements of the Latino/a/e people.
“Latino Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of our Latino students and families,” said Board Member Nick Melvoin. “LAUSD remains a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for every student, regardless of cultural background or immigration status, and we will continue advancing policies and practices that protect their rights, dignity, and educational opportunities.”
“The diversity of our students, staff, and families is the District’s greatest asset,” said Board Member Karla Griego. “At a time when our Latine community continues to face attacks, I am proud to co-sponsor this resolution reaffirming our District’s sanctuary status and honoring the rich identities of our students. Now more than ever, we must embrace our culture with pride and uplift our roots. This resolution ensures that every student feels seen, heard, and celebrated through curricula, programming, and the support services they deserve to succeed academically and socially.”
"¡Soy orgullosamente Latina!,” said Board Member Ortiz-Franklin. “I am honored to support this resolution celebrating the diverse rich culture, history, heritage, and contributions of our Latino/a/x/e community within LA Unified, our local leaders and across the nation. It is our commitment to ensure our scholars learn in culturally responsive and inclusive environments that uplift their identities and honor their diversity all year long. Feliz Mes de la Herencia Latina!”
