“Freedom to Learn” upheld as a core value
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 16, 2025) – The Los Angeles School Board, today, unanimously approved a resolution that affirms the District’s commitment to values such as academic freedom, culturally and responsive pedagogy, commitment to foster an inclusive, educational environment where every student, educator, and community members are treated with dignity and respect. Board Member Sherlett Hendy Newbill authored the resolution, which was co-sponsored by Board President Schmerelson, Board Vice President Rocio Rivas, Board Member Karla Griego and Student Board Member Jerry Yang.
Board Member Newbill said, “This resolution uplifts inclusive curriculum, protects educators, and promotes safe and affirming school environments for all students. “Los Angeles Unified stands firm in our belief that every student deserves access to an honest, inclusive, and high-quality education,” Superintendent Alberto M. "Our students deserve the freedom to learn the full, honest history of our country and world. Standing with our educators, we affirm that LAUSD classrooms must always be spaces where truth, diversity, and critical thinking are not only protected but celebrated," said Board Vice President Dr. Rocío Rivas.

We will continue investing in professional development, celebrating our District's diversity, and investing in community partnerships that advance educational equity to ensure all students have the opportunities they need to thrive.”
“Now more than ever we must stand firm in our belief that our students have the right to learn in an environment that is welcoming to all people-especially our most marginalized students,” said Board Member Karla Griego The curriculum must reflect the voices of all our communities and we must stand with our educators to have the freedom to teach these diverse perspectives and histories.”
“As a Board Member, educational equity has always been my guiding post. Regardless of federal pressure, our Board remains committed to diversity, culturally affirming and responsive instruction, and ensuring a safe and welcoming learning environment for all students,” said Board Member Kelly Gonez.
"Our children deserve an education that allows them to thrive in inclusive and equitable environments,” said Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin.
