Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Approves 2022-23 Revised Budget, Informed by Superintendent’s 2022-26 Strategic Plan
$19.9 Billion 2022-23 Revised Budget Implements a Student-Focused Approach, Including a $1.9 Billion Investment to Boost Academic Achievement and Support a Highly-Effective Workforce
Los Angeles, CA (August 30, 2022) – Today the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education unanimously approved the 2022-23 Revised Budget, as proposed by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. The Revised Budget incorporates additional revenues provided by the California State Budget than had been projected in the District’s Budget passed in June 2022. In alignment with the June version, the Revised Budget incorporates community voice and participation, the findings of Superintendent Carvalho’s 100-Day Plan, evolving information from the legislature in Sacramento, the development and emerging strategies from the 2022-26 Strategic Plan and the priorities of the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education, for a streamlined vision of the District’s future.
The over $19.9 billion budget incorporates $1.9 billion in targeted investments that strengthen Los Angeles Unified’s commitment to academic excellence, joy and wellness and supporting students and employees by providing equity-based funding, social emotional learning, school greening and outdoor education, expanded learning opportunities, tutoring services, dual language programs, parent engagement, staff professional development, school safety and security, special education and programs supporting students with hearing loss or characteristics of dyslexia.
Additionally, the Revised Budget includes a new Inflation Protection fund, which will ensure that Los Angeles Unified’s strategic investments in our students and employees will have their full impact even in a difficult economy.
“This Revised Budget reflects Los Angeles Unified’s commitment to investing in our strategic priorities toward becoming the premier urban school district of choice,” Superintendent Carvalho said. “Our values-based Budget enables Los Angeles Unified to fund and support the critical priorities of our Board, with the security provided by the inclusion of an Inflation Protection fund. Guided by our Strategic Plan, we will continue to implement strategies that enhance and inspire student achievement, support our highly effective workforce and protect taxpayers’ investments.”
“We are grateful that the State of California is investing in our public schools, and we in turn are investing in our school communities to address key areas where our students need the most support including targeting additional resources to our highest-needs students, expanding early education opportunities, and increasing mental health services,” Board President Kelly Gonez said.
