Sutter Middle School Receives Significant Technology and Connectivity Contribution

Los Angeles, CA (October 28, 2022) – To bolster connectivity for students, John A. Sutter Middle School has received new tablets equipped with data plans as part of the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools program.

A Verizon Innovative Learning Schools participant for the last four years, Sutter Middle School was selected as a demonstration school for their sustained commitment to creating powerful learning experiences. Sutter Middle School has also demonstrated a culture that leverages technology to improve academic outcomes for diverse learners.

“Sutter Middle School appreciates the opportunity to deepen our collaboration with Verizon Innovative Learning and the ability to share our experience with schools throughout their national network,” said Sutter Middle School Principal Kelly Welsh. “We look forward to refining our practices in leveraging technology to best support teaching and learning. The generous grant of updated, connected devices ensures that student accessibility and learning continues beyond the school day.”

As part of the program, Sutter Middle School will receive 1,019 devices with connectivity from Verizon.

“Access to digital technology is a vital part of providing students with an innovative education that will prepare them for the world,” said Board Vice President Nick Melvoin. “We are grateful to partners like Verizon for helping us achieve this goal and drive progress for the Sutter Middle School community.”

In partnership with non-profit Digital Promise, Verizon Innovative Learning addresses barriers to digital inclusion and helps drive equity within education for some of the most vulnerable populations across the country. The program provides technology devices, internet access and innovative STEM learning programs to students in under-resourced communities.

“On behalf of Verizon, we are excited to continue bringing connectivity and innovative learning programs to the Los Angeles Unified School District to help close the digital divide and ensure students have access to technology,” said Verizon Director of External Affairs Randal Hernandez. “The team at Sutter Middle School is a national model for integrating technology into the classroom and preparing students for careers in STEM and we’re proud to recognize them as a model of success.”

The Verizon Innovative Learning initiative also provides innovative STEM learning programs and professional development for teachers. A total of 23 schools within Los Angeles Unified are participating members.

“This ongoing partnership with Verizon will provide our students with the necessary digital tools they need to graduate ready for the world – to thrive in college, career and life," said Local District Northwest Superintendent Dr. David Baca. “Verizon's continued commitment to Sutter Middle School will empower our students to become conscious and thoughtful digital leaders to meet the challenges of their community."

A neighborhood school offering comprehensive and personalized services for over 800 students, John A. Sutter Middle School believes that all students should be empowered to be reflective, proactive problem solvers that use the tools of inquiry and innovation to meet the challenges of their community.
