First Ever Los Angeles Unified Family Day at the Discovery Cube LA

Board President Gonez partners with the Discovery Cube LA to promote science and learning for Los Angeles Unified families

LOS ANGELES, October 7, 2022 –– This Saturday, October 8, 2022, the Discovery Cube Los Angeles is hosting a free family day for all Board District 6 families in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified Board President Kelly Gonez.

The museum will open its doors at 10:00 AM and will welcome over 1,300 parents and students from Board District 6. Registered families will be able to enter free of charge until 1:00 PM. Admission includes access to the museum’s exhibits, as well as several workshops, including STEAM Career Day workshops in partnership with Create Now, designed to introduce kids to potential career paths in fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM). The workshops will include panels and Q&As with guest speakers, including Carnegie Observatories. Students and families can also attend the “Better Money Habits” and “Home Composting” workshops throughout the day sponsored by Discovery Cube and their environmental partners. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided for families free of charge.

As a former middle school science teacher herself, Board President Gonez understands the importance of STEM in the lives of students, and is committed to fostering a love of science at every age. “Our vision was to create a meaningful and educational experience for families in the East San Fernando Valley, where opportunities like these are sometimes difficult to access,” Board President Gonez shared. “We are grateful to the Discovery Cube Museum for opening its doors to our families and inspiring Los Angeles Unified students to explore the wonders of science.”

“With Discovery Cube LA located in the heart of Los Angeles Unified District Six, we’re excited to welcome local students and their families to the museum,” said Luis Almonte, VP of Operations and Community Engagement. “We know that early exposure to the sciences through playful learning experiences is important to building a foundation for STEM literacy. By supporting students to move from curiosity to genuine interest, we can intentionally set kids up for success academically and beyond. Our goal is to encourage their exploration of the sciences by creating a fun, safe and welcoming learning environment for all in the area.”

Los Angeles Unified families whose students attend schools in Board District 6 can still register at tinyurl.com/freefamilyday.
