Los Angeles Unified Announces Alignment to Streamline Instruction for Students and Establish Unrivaled, Forward-Looking School District
New Alignment Will Result in a $40 Million Savings to Reallocate for Students
Los Angeles, CA (Nov. 15, 2022) – Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho announced today changes to Los Angeles Unified’s organizational structure to align its purpose, functions and positions to the new 2022-26 Strategic Plan. After a series of achievements for the District including increasing attendance rates, demonstrating greater growth than peer schools across the country on the National Assessment of Educational Progress test and receiving positive financial assessments from three of the prominent rating agencies, the new alignment continues this momentum and will provide greater synergy and coherence to ensure all students receive an equitable, world-class academic experience.
The plan responds to the changed realities that require a different approach and a different Los Angeles Unified. It eliminates redundancies and duplication of services, streamlines directives and initiatives of the District, provides greater focus on instruction and academic programs, promotes accountability and focuses efforts on the shared goal of ensuring that all students are prepared to thrive and succeed in college, career and life.
This three-phased approach beginning this school year, includes consolidating the six Local Districts into four Regional offices to improve support for our neighborhood schools. While schools and families will not experience immediate changes this school year, this alignment will enable the District to increase coherence, clarify strategy and messaging and better align resources that can be reinvested to support schools as they implement programs and policies to propel student success. This effort will bring about greater efficiency and effectiveness through need-based, standardized staffing.
“Through efficiencies and strategic configurations, the new alignment is expected to result in approximately $40 million in savings that can be reinvested in preparing our students to be ready for the world,” said Superintendent Carvalho, whose Strategic Plan focuses on the goals of boosting college and career readiness, improving literacy and numeracy and deepening social-emotional learning and student wellbeing.
In the Central Office, personnel functions will be aligned and business practices will be streamlined to eliminate redundancies and increase effectiveness. This includes a new Chief Eco-Sustainability Officer to oversee efforts and practices that will increase the District’s role to combat climate change; a Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Coordinator will oversee DHH programs and foster a more inclusive District; and a Chief of Compliance and Audits will conduct performance audits of District programs as Superintendent Carvalho continues to improve transparency and accountability.
“Los Angeles Unified is a $20 billion organization entrusted with providing a world-class education so that our students graduate prepared and inspired to become the next generation of changemakers and leaders,” Superintendent Carvalho continued. “This alignment is critical to ensuring that we are working together to build cultures and systems of change and success.”
