LOS ANGELES - (Dec. 8, 2020) The Board of Education voted today to create a pathway to tenure for hundreds of teachers in the Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE).
The resolution by Board Vice President Jackie Goldberg, and co-sponsored by Board Members Dr. George J. McKenna III and Scott M. Schmerelson, reaffirms Los Angeles Unified’s commitment to maintaining the most robust Adult Education program in the country by ensuring that DACE teachers have the opportunity to achieve the same job security as their peers. DACE teachers who have been employed by Los Angeles Unified as probationary employees for two consecutive school years will become tenured teachers if they continue in their positions for a third year.
“I commend the service of our DACE teachers to Los Angeles Unified and to our Adult Education students,” Board Vice President Goldberg said. “I am very happy the Board took action today to recognize these wonderful teachers and the great contributions they make to our school district.”
DACE provides access to high-quality, pre- and post-secondary education and training opportunities at 11 centers and 140 satellite locations across Los Angeles Unified. DACE also administers the largest apprenticeship training program in the country, representing 61 trades and 41 individual program sponsors. DACE employs about 800 teachers and serves more than 68,000 students annually in programs such as English as a second language, academic and high school studies, and career and technical education.
“Education is important, no matter what your age,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said. “Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to invest in themselves by adding skills to pursue a new career.”
“Our duty is to education and to those who make it possible,” Board President Dr. Richard Vladovic said. “We are committed to supporting DACE and the teachers that create career pathways for thousands of students.”
“I am pleased to support the creation of a tenure-track pathway for our Adult Education faculty,” Board Member Dr. McKenna said. “They play a pivotal role in our teaching and learning community and are invaluable in helping grow the knowledge and skill base of our community members.”
“As a lifelong educator, I have always supported Adult Education and our Division of Adult and Career Education because it is a vital component in our communities, and it provides opportunities for our adult learners,” Board Member Schmerelson said. “It is never too late to acquire new skills that can change your life and lead to a career. Our apprenticeship training programs are high quality and taught by the best in the field. Supporting this resolution is the first step in recognizing the contributions and dedication our teachers and administrators have had over the years.”
“Our Adult Education teachers provide new skills and open up new life-changing opportunities for our adult learners, including many of our parents,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “This change recognizes that our educators are foundational to the success of our program. My thanks to these educators for their continued dedication to our students.”
