Board Member Mónica García Partners
With InnerCity Struggle and One Family LA
To Distribute $100 Gift Cards to 50 Families In Need
This Holiday Season
LOS ANGELES (December 21, 2020) — InnerCity Struggle received a $5,000 grant from One Family LA, an initiative of Great Public Schools Now, to support 50 in-need families in the Los Angeles area with $100 gift cards. One Family LA is a pandemic relief and advocacy fund established in March to support low-income families disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. InnerCity Struggle joined Board Member Mónica García to identify families in the area facing financial hardship due to the pandemic to participate in the donation.
“I am honored to continue serving our families during this difficult time and am especially grateful to continue working with community-based organizations like InnerCity Struggle and Great Public Schools Now for their willingness to meet the needs of our most vulnerable families,” said Board Member García. “We are being challenged in every way, but my focus is to support our communities in every way possible, and most importantly, learning at home.”
"The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact students of color from low-income households. We are grateful for the leadership of Los Angeles Unified Board Member Mónica García and InnerCity Struggle," said Dr. Ana Ponce, Executive Director of Great Public Schools Now. "They are working tirelessly to assist our most vulnerable students, and we are humbled to support their efforts with One Family LA funding."
“We are very grateful for this critical support for our youth and families during this challenging time,” said Maria Brenes, EdM, Executive Director of InnerCity Struggle. “We must continue to work together to support our highest-need communities through mutual-aid efforts. Together, we must demand more and equitable public resources for our communities which have been most impacted by the economic and health crisis.”
Gift cards have been distributed to 50 pre-selected families via post mail to uphold public health guidelines. Students from the following schools were recipients of the donations: Theodore Roosevelt High School, Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez High School, Woodrow Wilson High School, Abraham Lincoln High School, Esteban E. Torres High School, James Garfield High School and Boyle Heights Continuation High School.
