Los Angeles Unified Board of Education Approves Board Member Nick Melvoin’s
Resolution to Remove Barriers to Student Healthcare Access
LOS ANGELES, CA – March 10, 2020 – The Los Angeles Unified Board of Education voted today to approve Board Member Nick Melvoin’s resolution to implement a program and strategy that would ensure the maximum number of students annually receive no-cost dental screenings, vision examinations, and—if needed—prescription glasses. Co-sponsored by Board Members García, Goldberg and Gonez, the resolution aims to reduce burdensome paperwork that often stands in the way of providing these no-cost services to students.
“Healthy kids do better in school, and I think we have an obligation to help ensure that an untreated toothache or inability to see the board in class doesn’t have to impact a student’s ability to learn,” Board Member Melvoin said.
“There is no better place to provide basic health services to children than in schools,” Superintendent Austin Beutner said.
“The students of Los Angeles Unified have the right to have access to basic health services, and we will advocate for opportunities to increase inequitable access,” Board President Dr. Richard Vladovic said. “It is paramount for every student to have a healthy and learning experience in the classroom from the first day of class till the day of graduation.”
“We must continue to remove barriers to student learning and achievement,” Board Member García said. “I am proud of our school district for striving to address the whole child and believing that healthy students learn better.”
“The health of our students, including dental and vision needs, affects their ability to learn and reach their full potential,” Board Member Gonez said. “Today’s action will help us better meet their holistic needs, not just academic but physical, social, and emotional.”
Nick Melvoin is proud to serve the dynamic communities of District 4 on the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education. Nick’s election to the Board in May of 2017 follows a career fighting for our city’s schoolchildren. He believes that together, with the right leadership, we can ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity to succeed. Los Angeles Unified Board District 4 includes the communities of Brentwood, Del Rey, East Hollywood, Encino, Hollywood, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Tarzana, Toluca Lake, Topanga, Westchester, West Hollywood, Westwood, Woodland Hills, and Venice.
