Labor Partners Join Los Angeles Unified in Meetings with State Leaders to Discuss Increasing Investment in Los Angeles Schools (01-30-19)

Today, Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner, Deputy Superintendent Vivian Ekchian and Senior Executive Director for Finance and Policy Pedro Salcido met with the Office of Governor Newsom and state legislators representing the communities served by Los Angeles Unified. Representatives of Teamsters Local 572 and Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building & Construction Trades joined Los Angeles Unified leaders.

Los Angeles Unified and labor partners discussed potential sources of additional revenue to invest in Los Angeles schools, and the impact those investments would have in schools. Los Angeles Unified also briefed leaders in Sacramento on the details of the recently approved contract with UTLA.

“This contract is not the end, it’s the beginning,” said Superintendent Austin Beutner. “Now that all students and educators are back in the classroom, we must focus our attention to the long-term solutions.”

This marks the second round of meetings in less than a month between Los Angeles Unified and state leaders. Los Angeles Unified will continue to work with state legislators and the Governor’s administration to improve Los Angeles schools.
