Los Angeles Unified Bus Driver Named CHP School Bus Driver of the Year

Los Angeles, CA (May 9, 2023) – Today the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Altadena Area awarded Los Angeles Unified school bus driver Ms. Tamara Conley with the 2022 Southern Region School Bus Driver of the Year.

“Congratulations to Tamara Conley for receiving this important distinction and demonstrating the best of Los Angeles Unified,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “Our school bus drivers are a critical component to ensuring student safety, and individuals like Ms. Conley provide parents a peace of mind that their children are being cared for. She is an inspiration and represents how students are supported all day long.”

Every year, the California Highway Patrol presents the School Bus Driver of the Year award based on nominations. Successful candidates are selected based on hard work, dedication and contributions to the school bus industry for the safe transportation of students in California.

“Every day, school bus drivers safely transport the most precious cargo, our children,” CHP Chief of Enforcement and Planning Division Kevin M. Davis said. “The California Highway Patrol is proud to recognize Los Angeles Unified school bus driver Tamara Conley for her 36 years of dedication to this wonderful profession.”

“Receiving this award is the greatest thing,” Ms. Conley said. “I am in awe and very surprised to receive the Bus Driver of the Year award. It’s an inspiration, and many people cannot say that they have a job that they actually enjoy. I’m just really appreciative to have the opportunity to work for Los Angeles Unified.”

Ms. Conley has been a dedicated Los Angeles Unified bus driver for 36 years, has 30 years of accident-free driving and 15 years of perfect attendance, which has earned her multiple accolades and great respect from her students, peers and co-workers.

Every day you are trusted with our District's children, and every day you reward that trust with consistent quality and professionalism. On behalf of the Los Angeles Unified School District, thank you – and congratulations on a well-earned honor.”

“Congratulations to Tamara Conley for winning the California Highway Patrol School Bus Driver of the Year Award,” Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “This recognition is very important as we always seek to highlight our classified staff around the Los Angeles Unified School District. Tamara Conley has an excellent record of getting students safely to school, and it should be commended. She plays a vital role in the lives of our students and is an exceptional member of our academic community. Thank you, Tamara and, once again, congratulations!”

McKenna III said. “It is fitting that this honor comes during Classified Employees Month because it is emblematic of how important your role is to supporting the students in our schools.”

“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority,” Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas said. “Ms. Tamara Conley’s stellar record of transporting our students safely to and from school and field trips in this vast city is no small feat!”

“I am grateful to Ms. Tamara Conley for her dedication and servant leadership,” Los Angeles Unified Director of Transportation Daniel Kang said. “She is the first District employee whom some of our children see when they go to school and the last when they are dropped off. Ms. Conley represents the best of us.”

“Ms. Conley has amazing leadership qualities that bring out the very best in everyone she meets,” Los Angeles Unified Area Supervisor Mr. Frank Ramos and Driver Trainer Jose Pineda said. “Her positive attitude projects through her students and gives them the perfect start to their day. We were honored to nominate Ms. Conley and everyone on our team is excited about this outstanding achievement.”
