Los Angeles Unified Receives CCAP Grant Funding to Support Dual Enrollment with Community Colleges
Sixty-One Schools Awarded $100,000 Each
Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 25, 2023) – The California Department of Education funded the College and Careers Access Pathways (CCAP) Grant, a one-time, four-year grant to support dual enrollment programming. Sixty-one LAUSD schools were each awarded $100,000 to support the expansion of their dual enrollment programs with the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).
“The expansion of dual enrollment, allowing students to be enrolled in college courses while still in high school, gives our students a significant advantage for succeeding in post-secondary education,” Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho said. “We are thankful for this grant from CDE and look forward to strengthening our partnership with LACCD.”
Schools submitted program models that adhere to the Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway and/or General Education pathway models where the dual enrollment courses allow students to complete requirements towards a certificate or degree program while earning college credit. Funding is allocated directly to school sites where it can be used to support students with necessities including enrollment, tutoring and parent outreach. Funding will also support collaborating with LACCD partners in building dual enrollment pathways, courses and programs while supporting instructors with professional development with LACCD.
In alignment with the District’s strategic plan, this work will expand access to advanced learning options for students. Dual enrollment allows students to earn college credit while in high school giving them an authentic college experience. Dual enrollment programming has demonstrated a positive impact on educational outcomes for students, including high school completion, college enrollment, and overall academic achievement.
“We are very grateful for this grant, which amplifies the transformative power of dual enrollment for our students,” Board President Jackie Goldberg said. “Earning college credits in high school accelerates their academic journey and sets them on a path to success.”
“I am delighted to see this investment into our district schools for dual enrollment programs,” Board Vice President Scott M. Schmerelson said. “With college enrollment numbers down across the country, I am confident that this funding will help our students gain insight into college programs that will help them in life beyond high school while also informing parents about the importance of going to college. It will only serve to benefit the Los Angeles region.”
“This critical funding will go a long way to expand the number of students who have access to dual enrollment classes while in high school,” Board Member Dr. George McKenna III said. “The simple exercise of exposing students to college classes in high school builds academic confidence in their core curriculum. We are excited about the possibilities for our students that will come with this increase in funding.”
“Heartfelt thanks to the CDE and congratulations to our Los Angeles Unified dual enrollment schools that earned this vital funding,” Board Member Dr. Rocío Rivas said. “Dual enrollment courses give our high school students a firm foundation to pursue higher learning and lucrative career pathways. These funds will help our schools expand student participation while nurturing the vital collaboration between our District and LACCD.”
“We are thankful for—and will continue to seek out—partnerships like this one with LACCD, that give our students more access and opportunity to succeed in their post-secondary educational journeys,” Board Member Nick Melvoin said.
"Preparing students for success after they graduate is a critical part of our work, and this grant will offer new opportunities for students to begin their collegiate career while in high school,” Board Member Kelly Gonez said. “This is an exciting opportunity to expand our support for dual enrollment, deepen collaboration with our community college partners, and ultimately help more students achieve success in high school and beyond.”
“Congratulations to all 61 recipients for this grant, with a special shout-out to our Board District 7 schools: Carson Academy of Medical Arts, Gardena High School, Humanities and Arts Academy of Los Angeles (HARTS), King/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, San Pedro High School, Narbonne High School and University Pathways Medical Magnet Academy,” Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said. “I am grateful for this CDE grant, which will provide our scholars access to various college courses, including CTE pathways, with opportunities to earn certificates and degrees with less debt. We deeply value post-secondary educational experiences during secondary school and know this will go a long way towards our students’ realizing their fullest potential in college, career and life.”
“In our partnership with LACCD, we share a common vision of providing equity in access, equity in support, and equity in success,” Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Dr. Karla V. Estrada said. “We are thrilled about the endless possibilities that this grant will provide for our students.”
“Thanks to the partnership with LACCD, our students who participate in the dual enrollment courses will have an extra advantage to be better equipped and prepared to be Ready for the World,” Chief Academic Officer Dr. Frances Baez said. “I am grateful for this opportunity that will allow our students to succeed and prosper in their academic journey.”
