LOS ANGELES (June 17, 2019) – The Beyond the Bell Branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District is offering a variety of summer programs at many schools. (More information and a list of programs at each school, including eligibility requirements, operating dates and times, may also be found by visiting: https://btb.lausd.net/summerprogramsbtb.)

Summer Enrichment Programs: Beyond the Bell is offering free summer programs for six weeks, through July 26, serving over 24,000 students at select elementary and middle school campuses. These programs are implemented through LA’s BEST, the Youth Development Program (YDP), Beyond the Bell Middle and Elementary School Units. In addition, The Portable Pool Program operates Learn to Swim/Water Safety at 16 schools for eight weeks. The Ready-Set-Go! Summer Program offers thematic, hands-on academic enrichment programs in an engaging and fun camp style. R-S-G operates at 64 sites throughout Los Angeles Unified.

Summer School: The High School Summer Term program is available to current Los Angeles Unified high school students in grades 9-12 who need credit recovery. Schools may offer two additional classes for enrichment and/or elective courses. Students may take up to two courses and earn ten credits during the summer. This program runs from Wednesday, June 19 through Wednesday, July 24 at 73 campuses.

CyberCamps: Beginning Monday, June 24, high school students will be able to participate in a five-day camp that will build their knowledge and skill in using Windows, Linux, and Cisco. Students will have the opportunity to test their proficiency in finding vulnerabilities in these network systems.

Summer Bridge: The Beyond the Bell High School Summer Bridge program is available to current Los Angeles Unified 8th grade students who are heading to high school. Students who have struggled academically in middle school are invited to participate in the program that runs from Wednesday, June 19 through Wednesday, July 24 at 53 sites. The curriculum includes English remediation, STEAM collaborative group challenges, culturally authentic and responsive text-based activities, the online Naviance and a college and career readiness program. Upon completion, participating students will earn five elective credits.

Extended Learning Opportunity Summer (ELOS) Program: The ELOS program is designed to provide supplemental instruction in core subject areas for students in grades K-8 who are not meeting grade level standards at eligible participating schools based on priority of need. From the Underwood Family Farms in the north to the Aquarium of the Pacific in the south, to the American Museum of Ceramic Arts in the east to the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in the west, over 500 elementary and middle school classes (thousands of elementary and middle school students) will be visiting over 35 destinations during the ELOS program from June 19 through July 19.

Migrant Education Program Summer School: Beginning Monday, June 17, and continuing to July 16, Pre-K through grade 12 students in the Migrant Education Program or Refugee Educational Support Program will begin summer school at Harmony Elementary. To build academic skills in order to avoid summer learning loss, students will participate in a variety of activities including trips to the zoo, building rockets, and writing poetry.

Summer Reading Backpack Program: This year 19 schools have received backpacks containing reading materials for students in grades K-8. A webinar has been created to support parents in using the materials over the summer with their children. The webinar and list of schools is available at https://btb.lausd.net/summerprograms
