Superintendent Beutner, board members and special guests visit schools to celebrate work being done and to highlight opportunities found at Los Angeles Unified
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 20, 2019) – Superintendent Austin Beutner today joined Los Angeles Board of Education members, and special guests to welcome students, employees and families to the first day of school.
“The first day of school brings a sense of excitement as we welcome everyone back,” Superintendent Beutner said. “Over 60,000 hardworking women and men in our schools are dedicated to making sure every student gets the best possible education. Our continuing efforts to reinforce the school as the center of our work, to be more transparent in all we do and to increase engagement with the families and communities we serve, was evident at each stop along the way.”
During a daylong tour that began before dawn, the superintendent, board members and special guests visited more than a dozen sites that highlighted programs in music, arts, sports, business and entrepreneurship, and other areas, which compliment classroom work, and help to prepare students for college, career and life.
“I am happy to welcome back all of our parents, staff, and students for our 2019-2020 school year,” School Board President Dr. Richard Vladovic said. “It is our continuing mission to raise student achievement to help them succeed in the 21st century and realize their dreams in life, no matter what they may be. We will continue to work with parents as equal partners to put the education of our students as the number one priority. Our schools are a safe place for our students and their families. Let’s make this an excellent school year, our children deserve it.”
Board Vice President Jackie Goldberg said, “Happy first day of school! We must all work as a team to help our students achieve success and view themselves as lifelong learners.”
“Today is a new beginning,” Board Member Dr. George J. McKenna III said. “Students please work hard, learn your lessons, listen to your teachers and always do your best.”
Board Member Mónica García said, “Happy Back-to-School! We raise the bar every year, and this year is no different. With the year 2020 coming, our motto this year is ‘20/20 Vision: Endless Possibilities for Our Students.’ More than ever, we are committed to our path toward 100 percent graduation for all. Together with our students, families, school staff and community partners, we will rise to every challenge so that all kids can read, write, think and most of all, believe that they can and that they will accomplish great things in life.”
Visiting schools in the San Fernando Valley, Board Member Scott M. Schmerelson said, “We are ready for another year because we have a mission to make sure that every student has access to the resources and opportunities they need to be successful in their lives and to be the future leaders in the complex world they will inherit.”
Board Member Nick Melvoin said, “We welcome our students, families, and staff back to a new year in Los Angeles Unified—a new chance to improve student achievement with urgency, increase district transparency to build credibility and engage stakeholders, and provide support to the teachers, principals, and staff who make it all possible every day.”
Board Member Kelly Gonez said, “Welcome back to our students and families in the East Valley and across LA Unified! Thanks to the hard work of school administrators, educators, and staff, we are ready for a year of deepened learning and bigger dreams. From our earliest learners to the Class of 2020, we are working to ensure every student is on the path to success in college and careers!”
